In the mid-1940s, chemist Morris Berger & partners created the AME Paint Company. They produced alkyd (oil) texture paints in a small Pittsburgh PA facility. In 1953, Morris Berger teamed with Irving Blumenfeld, and the Gateway Paint & Chemical Company was created. Gateway Paint continued manufacturing texture paints in Pittsburgh, and sold the product through local hardware and paint stores.
Their business expanded to produce a complete line of architectural paints for interior & exterior surfaces. Industrial coating products were added for O.E.M (Original Equipment Manufacturing) applications. These include DTM (Direct To Metal) coatings, rust inhibitive primers and topcoats, high temperature coatings, etc.
In 1963, Gateway Paint had outgrown it's manufacturing facility and moved to its current location in Pittsburgh's Strip District. At its new location, and with further expansion in 1986, Gateway Paint met the increasing demand for their architectural products and their ever expanding customized OEM industrial coatings business.
Today the company is still owned by the Blumenfeld family, and continues to be a leader of OEM industrial coatings which are custom formulated to the specific needs of its customers. Gateway Paint also continues to be a leader in specialty architectural paints and related products.
